“ I was only impressed by the chocolate souffle. The Ahi tuna I ordered was overcooked and had lost its natural juicy taste. ”

“ 1/09 Sun. Roy's f%d roars. Dine About Town $35 deal started w/ sampler trio of deep-fried lobster potsticker (chewy, not crunchy, tiny fillings), seared shrimp (gr8 teppanyaki taste) & sushi (yummy sauteed salmon + avocado). My Szechwan spiced pork back ribs (not too baby, 7 half-pieces) were flamed grilled to black. Some pieces wer less tender than others. Intricate flavors, B. Her beef short ribs wer braised in honey mustard & garlic. All tender & delicious, B+. I hated when both entrees had d same mashed potatoes, asparagus & carrot on d side. desserts wer 1dRfL. Melting hot chocolate souffle was truly signature. Crispy outside, warm fuzzy inside. Macademia nut tart was all nuts on top, sumptuous & satisfying. I was impressed w/ d full serving size on each course. Need to try fish next time. Dis place is spacious, dimly lit & casually elegant. hawaiian martini ($11) had subtle pineapple & coconut flavors. Luv so much, got d recipe from our server. All pro & frndly service. 3.5* ”

“ We had a wonderful meal at Roy's last night, although the service was very slow. Luckily, the conversation was good so the wait wasn't unbearable. We started with drinks at the bar, which were excellent. If you like lychee, the caipirinha is brilliant, although at $10 I would expect nothing less.
The rack of lamb was delicious and was served with intriguing potato dumplings that got rave reviews from everyone at the table. Roy's does a limited selection of sushi and the spicy tuna roll, although not noticeably spicy was one of the best sushi rolls I ever eaten.
The melting hot chocolate souffle is not to be missed. This is one of the places I would go back to some night just to have dessert, it was that good. ”

“ It's not the same as when you're on the islands...go for the pupus and cocktails, skip the main courses. I brought my husband here for Valentines...I was bummed that they didn't feature their chocolate souffle cake.

“ Went there twice for their prix fixe menu which are a steal. For appetizer, you get one of each of their appetizer from the regular menu, typically, the shrimp and the rib. I usually get all ribs because I am allergic to shrimp. The ribs were good. For entree, there is a choice of typically fish or meat. I had the braised pork once and it was unbelievably tender and flavorful. For dessert, it had to the chocolate molten cake. I also had appetizers at their Pebble Beach location after golf one day and my friend from Hawaii was absolutely thrilled with the food.

“ First impressions-- The place has a great vibe and has a nice classy atmosphere. Nice decor. The hostesses and servers are friendly and on the spot. We only had the appetizer plate but it was still enough to fill the both of us. However, the bill still came out to be in the medium range. It's somewhat pricey. Based on what we ate, I didn't think the food was all that great. The srhimp sticks were average, the ribs were actually kind of dry, not tender and just plain salty, and the potstickers could have easily been from the frozen section. The Hawaiin Martini is ok if you like sweet drinks-- not really my style. If you're going to have dessert the Melting Hot Chocolate Souffl?s pretty damn good though. Because of the quality of food vs price, Roy's left me feeling neutral. I'm sure I'll be back to sample more of the menu in the future though. ”

“ Went here for dine about town a year or two ago. I went with three other friends, and there were four entrees on the menu, so we each got one to try them all. The appetizer sampler was good with shrimp, a baby back rib. All the entrees were delicious, but the pot roast was my favorite. It was flavorful and tender. The chocolate lava cake dessert was VERY rich and sweet. beautiful restaurant. ”

“ The cocktails were great. The DASF app was awesome, it was a lobster potsticker, a short rib and a prawn. My entree was bland, I barely ate it (macadamia crusted mahi mahi) - very disappointing b/c this could have been wonderful. My husband's dish was very good, it was the salmon w/ a sweet teriyaki like glaze. yum. the desserts were really yummy too, the melting choc souffle and a nut tart. the restaurant is decorated well and the service was great so even though my fish was below par, i'll still give it a positive. i guess we'll have to go again to see if they drop to a neutral. ”

“ Everything about this place was great..... except when you actually eat the food. The service was great, decor was great, presentation of the food is great, but the actual taste of the food left something to be desired. I almost didn't have the heart to give this place a negative and I guess other people felt the same with the amount of neutral votes....afterall, those other features I mentioned were exceptional. However, pleasing the taste buds has to be priority #1 in my book when choosing a restaurant. Everything else is icing on the cake.... After all.. people put up with bad service for good food. But, nobody puts up with bad food for good service. I spent $200 for 2 at Roy's and felt I could have gotten the same satisfaction spending $20 somewhere else. If you must go... get some drinks...try some appetizers.... and like everyone else get the molten chocalate cake... just skip the entrees. ”

“ Damn, I love Roys in Pebble Beach but didn't love it in SF. I've been to couple Roys i.e. Seattle and the Inn @ spanish Bay, and Seattle kinda sucked where Pebble Beach kicks ass. The one in SF fits somewhere in the middle. Roy Yamaguchi has always been a chef I've liked, and his Hawaiin/asian fusion is a good thing. The space is great and the service is excellent. I was surprised walking into Roys thinking why haven't I ever been here...it's kinda off the radar since we have so many amazing restaurants that we don't pay mind to the minichains. The hamachi appetizer was fresh, but the accompanying sauce didn't work...soy sauce w/wasabi would have better. The butterfish was succulent, and even though the tasty macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi was cooked perfectly, the fish was little tough. The risotto was decent, but definitely stick with the seafood dishes. The saving grace is that the service and our server was excellent. ”

“ chain. this place is for the blue suited fat salesen from the midwest and the hookers that love them..not in the same way the tonga room is but it really is not an sf local. the food is ok but missing the flair of what hawaii is reping in the real food world. sort of sam choy lite. leave this one to the tourists! ”

“ I have had apps at Roy's in Seattle which were sub par (and it is now closed)and apps at Roys at Pebble Beach which were lovely. Finally tried Roy's in SF last night. The atmosphere is great and the server was excellent. The cocktails were great had the hawaiian Martini and Mai Tai. The food overall was just OK. Had the hamachi app---hamachi was very good but the tartar sauce thing combined with it was overwhelming and not complimentary. The duck confit app was asian seasoned and not crisp enough. The rissoto was tasty but thats it. The butter fish was succulent! The macadamion encrusted mahi mahi -though not overcooked- was tough. Overall I was underwhelmed with the food. I won't return for the food...but maybe drinks...maybe an app. ”

“ I didn't even know there was a roy's here in SF. But some friends decided last week to eat out everynight at a different pacific pan asian hawaiin place and this was the second in our themed week out(rick's,sneaky tiki and the tonga room rounded out the tour-skipped trader vics and couldnt think of any more so ended up throwing in our sarongs and ate at a new french place in bernal the final night) went in around 6:30 and while the place was not packed mid week it slowly filled up as we sat. Lovely big room clean airy. good wine list...so no bowl drinks this night for me. The chicken salad was good and tasty. The mixed apps for two was stretched to four! tasty. the hamachi on wonton was delicious and the lobster crab thing was over the top. too much too bad as the small plates all rocked. the ono was tasty too. I would stick with small plates and drinks here. Felt a little out of place with all the traveling salesmen and tourists but when in rome! ”

“ Dinner update - Friday night walk up found us seated at the Chef's counter, which was a nice place to watch it all happen. The wine by the glass selection was excellent. The bleu cheese with fig ap was really a cut above the usual, the shrimp/noodle entree was very good, as was the lamb shank. The desserts were also very good. Recommended! ”

“ Damn it?s been years since we?ve been to Hawaii, and there are just too many other things and places to go to be bumping in to short people with cameras! Feeling unusually moody we caught the 615 PM flight to Roy?s on 2nd street. The taxi bill was over 20 bucks but for a fast relatively inexpensive trip to Hawaii, why not? Immediately the hawaiian martini brought to the table in less then 3 min started to cheer me up! Beautifully prepared lobster potstickers and tiny pork ribs, I felt my mood changing. The decorations, music and service, I swore I had just exited the elevator in Honolulu and was greeted by Roy again! The Mahi Mahi with a Macadamia crust was one of the best fish entrees this millennium. The evening was quickly terminated with the presentation of a volcano of chocolate out of a cake called their souffl? This is the first and only time that a chain earns my respect and return. Parking is non existent unless you use a garage, or splurge and come via the Taxi. Aloha! ”

“ Fresh seafood, beautiful presentation, good mixed drinks, a comfortable environment, and delicious desserts, what's not to like about Roy's. The neighborhood can be a little odd and the prices can feel high, but the food makes everything worthwhile. All the appetizers were tasty, the poketini and the ribs are a must. The butterfish is awesome, as are the scallops, the lamb, and the pork porterhouse. ”

“ Want a nice out to dinner hawaiian dinner? than Roy's is the place, great fish, and appetizers. The specialty drinks while a bit pricey are yummy themselves. My favorite time to visit Roy's is at lunch and to get the bento box. This is definitely the best value on the menu. ”

“ THE BEST place for a piece of fish in the city. Served with hawaiian flare, I've been half a dozen times and never been disappointed. Quite pricey and well worth it. If you are with a group, get the appetizer combo and the tuna poke, absolutely amazing. All the fish choices for main course are flawless, so take your pick. And DO NOT skip the chocolate souffle, it's by FAR the best in the city (Gary Danko included). One note: if you are into sake flights, they have some good ones, but DON'T try Roy's label, sake or wine. He should stick to fish and souffles. ”

“ roy's is a good and dependable restaurant. the crab cakes are very good (probably some of the best i've ever had), and the shrimp dish that i had was very good. don't get the braised short ribs...stick with the seafood! i'm pretty sure that they always have a prix-fixed meal, which is a good deal (maybe $30-$40). and you absolutely have to get the chocolate souffle. do not skimp on this dessert! skip the appetizer if you have to, but roy's chocolate souffle is the best. rich in chocolate, and never under/over cooked. i'd be happy to go back to roy's anytime. the hawaii one is even better, if you ever get a chance. ”

“ If we want to get away to hawaii but can't fly, we eat here. always reminds us of the islands. laid back setting but tasty, tasty food. last time I was there it was a seminar and they had all 40 people fed with hot meals, not an easy trick. seafood is the specialty and they have such wonderful presentation. “ 1996 to 2003 -- I had been to three of the Roy's restaurants in Hawaii (Big Island, Maui and Kauai) and was excited to see that they came to SF as I had had a great meal each time with equally great service. I arranged our office's 2003 holiday lunch at Roy's SF and it was fabulous. The service from beginning to end was great and the food was awesome as usual. Everyone (~30 people) loved it.
2005 - I went to Roy's in January with two friends for the $31.99 for three course meal deal and had a great meal again. I had the mixed appetizers, nut encrusted mahi-mahi with lobster sauce, and caramel-nut torte with ice cream for dessert. My two friends had the same except they both had the molten chocolate cake for dessert (which was also great). The restaurant was packed and there were several large dinner parties (of boisterous convention goers), so service was a bit pressed, but they really did try their best to be attentive to our table. ”

“ This has been one of my favorite seafood restaurants ever. However, I've had service problems 2 of the 3 times I've been to the SF location. Once (a few years ago) they were an hour late for a dinner reservation on a birthday, and then screwed up the bill. Haven't been back since, I hope they've improved... ”
