“ They have a great variety of food in their menu. I've tried some of them and actually, they were pretty good. But:
1. The servings were small
2. Service was slow
3. Prices were high.

“ I liked the spring roll and the sushi here, but service was really slow, you'll get hungry in between courses. The prices were reasonable considering the nice location. But my sad experience with its bad service was itself a big turn off.

“ I don't get it. Why is this place so mobbed? The food was good but not THAT good and as others noted, it is pricey. We did love the rack of lamb and the desserts were delicious but the carpaccio appetizer was pretty much a mush. There was a great selection of belgian beers. The din in this place made it impossible to converse with someone across the table unless you leaned over until your were practically in your food. If you sit facing away from the view as I was, the decor had all the charm of an underground parking garage. Unlike some of the other reviewers, we had decent service-competent and efficient but not overly friendly which was fine with me. And I HATED the gender neutral unisex restroom. I do not need or want some male attendant opening the toilet stall/room door for me nor do I fancy washing my hands in a trough. Guess I'm just not hip enough to enjoy this place. ”

“ Hip place in a great location, just impossible to get reservations so I'd just sit at the bar. Not so authentic but good food: good yellowtail sushi style, spring roll, scallops with salad, shaking beef, crab glass noodle, duck; lemmongrass tofu and japanese eggplants (light coconute flavored) are not bad either. The broken rice can be undercooked sometimes, but that's minor. I usually take people from out of town here.

“ Loved it! Amazing food and excellent service. Definitely try the japanese yellowtail. The best I've had. The shaking beef lives up to all the hype it gets from other reviews. Flank steak was wonderful and creme brulee with creamy goodness. Our waiter, Robert, was the best waiter ever! Will definitely go again. ”

“ Visited 2/07. Slanted Door looks like an upscale neomodern dining hall. The glass & wood interior by Olle Lundberg fits perfectly with the simplistic asian fusion cuisine. The dinner menu is impressive in its wide varieties that can suit any palate. The cellophane noodles are mixed with generous lumps of Dungeness crab meat, with minimal sauce. The flavors are noticeable yet not intruding ? basil, fish sauce, oil, and touch of sugar? The spicy squid is super fresh and tender, lightly cooked with pineapple, sweet red peppers, jalape?and thai basil. Imagine the blending of natural fruity sweetness against the mildly hot and herbal spicy tastes. I can unravel the cooking secret here: every ingredient has a purpose to attribute to the multidimensional taste, and no ingredient is used without a reason. The sweet mung bean dumplings in warm spicy ginger soup are just amazing. Pardon my graphic writing: feeling the soft dumpling in the mouth is like french kissing! 4 stars out of 5 ”

“ I had lunch at the Ferry Building location for the first time since the migration from the Mission. Sadly, I still don't understand what the hype is all about. The wait person we had was not very personable, actually pretty abrasive. The service is not very good either, dishes were 30-40 minutes apart. In between dishes, the bus person asked if he could clear our table, he didn't know we had another dish coming.
The actual dishes themselves were bland. The Banh Xeo, "vietnamese Crepe" as they call it, was presented with a pittance of lettuce and mint. The dipping sauce was bland and lacked the zing it normally has.
It's pricey, which is fine if it's worth it, but this is not justified. Perhaps it's the view.
If you want vietnamese, don't get disappointed here, go to the Tenderloin or to Little Saigon where the real deal is.

“ I haven't been here since it first opened at the Ferry Building. I was happy to find that the frenzy has died down and lunch reservations were not difficult to come by. I must say that it is a pricey restaurant, but food is good and hey the rent must be high. Recommend getting the shaking beef, grapefruit salad, and crab cellophane noodles. ”

“ It's so pretty and the food is so great, you just need to overlook how noisy it is and how tough it can be to make a reservation. I know, it was better when it was on Valencia and you at least had a chance of just walking in at lunch, but those days are gone, so just buck up and call their annoying reservation line. The payoff will come when you're able to tuck into the fabulous lemon grass tofu. Only my frail grasp on propriety keeps me from licking the plate and next time I just might. I'm also a big fan of the silky creme brulee. ”

“ As someone with relatively pedestrian tastes (compared to everyone else here) I've been reading reviews but not writing them...until now. My experience at Slanted Door was so miserable I simply had to say something. Their service, or lack thereof, is nothing less than abominable. It was always snooty when they were in the Mission but now it has reached new lows. They should just move the restaurant to Orinda since that's the crowd they cater to now. I had to practically beg them to serve me a drink at the bar beforehand while I waited for the host to acknowledge my existence; I guess an apology for the 30min wait past my reservation time was too much to expect. Full disclosure: this review is only about the service, and not the food, because I left in disgust without eating, never to return to this bastion of limitless snobbery. If you believe that service and ambience are as important as food then do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere. Anywhere else.

“ I loved it! I'm surprised at some people's reviews. This restaurant is the real deal. There's a reason why it's so popular and it's not just hype.
The shaking beef made me quiver, the caramelized prawns made me shiver, the papaya salad made me want to order more! Yes, it's a tad pricey, but in my humble opinion, a person is making a big mistake if he/she/he-she/she-he compares the prices found in a hole-in-the-wall vietnamese restaurant to Slanted Door's prices. They're two different things. Much like comparing lychees to mangosteens. I wouldn't order Zuni's delicious skinny fries and get upset because it's not priced like it is at McDonald's. But, to each his/her/herm own.

“ I really had a great evening here with a friend eating at the bar. We were talking to other people there, and it felt really communal. The food was actually better than I had anticipated. The salmon was some of the best I've ever had--it was cooked medium rare, as it should be--but the shaking beef far out shone it. I loved that they seemed to have used some of the produce from the farmer's market that is held there weekly. The tangy pluot tart was fantastic and was complimented with the light sweetness of a scoop of white pepper ice cream. It made me think of Cibo Matto. ”

“ If someone pays for my meal, maybe I will come again. Otherwise, this is one of the most overhyped restaurants I've been to. I love asian fusion cuisine, but not this place. The food is way overpriced for something as simple as say: turnip cakes or imperial rolls. I could get tastier food at any local vietnamese or chinese restaurant for less than half the price. The service was annoying. Our waiter kept pushing me to order more food to the point where it was kind of obnoxious. The restaurant decor was really hip and probably worth seeing, but not for the price of a meal. I think the only thing good besides the nice decor, was the Lychee iced tea. ”

“ Having heard so many great things about this place, I was throughly disappointed. I can't quite give it a negative rating, but I am close. The service was throughly lacking. We had a very aloof waiter who never checked back in on us after he had taken our order. The decor is nice, but overcrowded and noisy. The wine list was way over priced, we ordered a medium priced bottle and it tasted like something out of a box. The food was the only positive point. We had the fresh spring rolls which were delicious. Then scallops, halibut, and noodles with crab - which were all pretty good. I will not return. WAY too expensive, can find just as good vietnamese food elsewhere.

“ Good food, great decor, and good atmosphere if you can ever get a table!
Definitely make reservations before going or else you will be waiting all night or trying to get a place in the bar area, which always seems to be crowded! The food is very good esp. the imperian rolls. I've been to both Slanted Door when it was in the Mission and now at the Embarcadero... it seems like it has lost some of its appeal.... now that it has gone very popular and more expensive!

“ The most amazing meal for the money in a very long time. This was my first trip to the new Ferry building location. It was an anniversary dinner so we tried everything. The first dish was the weakest though very tasty. The Shrimp dumplings, Great taste but that sticky dumpling texture. Everything got incredible from there. The dungenous crab appetizer, the beet salad, the light tofu salad replete with fine shreds of vegetables, and our entrees the perfectly flaky sea bass and the spicy squid with red peppers. The margaritas were a bit strong so be warned. Even the desserts impressed us, the dark chocolate pot de creme and the lemon pudding with huckleberry sorbet and citrus salad.
The service was casual and professional and extremely effective (rare combination). I love the open modern and softly bright space. It was a little on the loud side but not uncomfortable. I will return to the downtown location, but I am eager for the reopening on valencia...whenever.

“ While my friends love this place, I thought it was just okay given the noise and the price of the food. I love to eat, and I love good food, but it's gotta be worth it. Though I found the vegetarian spring rolls way too spicy, the spinach w/garlic was yummy. The highly acclaimed sea bass was crunchy but the sauce was served on the side of a very uninspired salad. It was okay. The best part was the desserts. The moist Meyer lemon pudding cake served with homemade huckleberry sorbet was just divine! As was the chocolate peanut butter layer cake which outdid the bland vanilla ice cream it was served with. The service and the portions were good, but given the number of fantastic restaurants in the city, the food was not worth the price by far! ”

“ There's so much to say about Slanted Door that's likely been said before. It has a long history. Let me cut to the chase.
Yes! You want imperial rolls. In fact, you want all the appetizers. You want grapefruit jicama salad and you will eat every candied walnut on the plate. You want shaking beef. You want carmelized prawns. You want anything with eggplant in it. For dessert (you will have dessert) you want coffee and creme brulee.
No reservation? Sit at the bar; you can order food there too. ”

“ After all the raves I'd heard, perhaps I'd set my expectations too high? Great atmosphere, although not particularly welcoming - I felt as though I was an intrusion on the waiter's space. Perhaps he was annoyed because I didn't order any overpriced cocktails? In any case, it was tasty but I won't return - too many other places to try for this one to merit a second look. ”

“ This always seems to happen, you find a great place, the food is great, the value is great, the chef is great, and then kaboom, they move into a place that the rent goes from a buck a foot to 8 or 10 bucks. Well where do you think the rent payment is coming from? We popped in here just because my buddy wanted to see the new place since they moved from the mission. What was once a nice meal with cozy surroundings and a good deal has turned into a bad value, with a tab for dinner for two for a hundred bucks! There is no vietnamese food worth a hundred bucks, and I don?t need to schmooze here with the elite from lower Market St. Food OK although cold, service was ok when you got the attention of someone, the ambiance too loud! For me this is a no return, let the people that pack it in pay for the rent, I myself will look for another store front in the Mission! At least there I can find a parking space the same day! ”

“ I like it though it is on pricey side. But hey, look at where the location is, and the owner's got to pay the rent too. So.... Essentially, you are paying for the dining experience in a well decorated, hip restaurant with great views. The food is tasty, fresh and is on par with the local vietnamese dives that I like to go to. I particularly liked a catfish clay pot dish that we had for dinner. It tasted like unagi. Their desserts also stood out for my wife and I. Servers are efficient, knowledgeable, and polite. Good times in a loud atmosphere. ”

“ Slanted Door...check! another 'hot' restaurant to check off my list. On an expense account? Being taken out by Clients or Vendors? then Slanted Door is definitely worthy of a stop. With it's breathtaking views of the Bay and fairly decent (albeit overpriced) food, a casual business lunch is right in order. The Slanted Door spring rolls, Crepe, grilled 5 spice chicken, Niman Ranch Steak (over noodles) and Carmelized Shrimp, were all quite tasty and able to easily be shared amongst four people. Top lunch off with a vietnamese Iced tea and the flourless peanut chocolate cake or fruit crisp, and your ready to head back to work without too heavy of a meal. Probably wont be making another stop on my own any time soon, but wont turn down an offer of a meal when someone else is buying. ”

Way overpriced and too tough to get a reservation to bother with it. Just as good vietnamese food at the Tao Cafe at Guerrero and 22nd and half the price. “ i think their service and the environment was comfier at the brannan location but i still think they serve the best vietnamese food in san francisco. it's a little on the pricey side, about $80 a couple w/cocktails. great for vegetarians also. the restaurant has a high tech, modern, but cold feel. always try to request a booth. the bar seatings are uncomfortable. people hang like hawks behind you waiting for you to leave. trying to get the bartenders attention is difficult but the food comes faster here once you order. they have the best spring rolls (comes with a sweet/spicy peanut sauce), imperial rolls, than any restaurant. they know what they're doing. awesome shaking beef, pork chops, and jicama papaya salad, daicon rice cakes, and sweet white corn w/chantrelle mushrooms. stay away from the clay pot dishes, kinda bland. great desserts. clean but strange co-ed restrooms. kinda hard to fix your skirt or put on lipgloss with a bunch of people standing in line right there. ”

“ I'm vietnamese so I have eaten at a lot of good vietnamese restaurants. For authentic, stick to San Francisco's Little Saigon neighborhood or check out Tu Lan. But I didn't mind The Slanted Door. It looked like a good spot to meet friends after work and lounge at the bar for happy hour. I felt the dining room was way too loud for my taste - and I don't usually mind crowds! The dishes are definitely overpriced but you are paying for the atmosphere. What I mean is, you wouldn't want to take a first date to an authentic vietnamese restaurant.
I probably wouldn't come back just because there are so many other restaurants in SF but items I felt were memorable were the lychee iced tea (WOW very complex) and the steamed fish. The crab and asparagus soup is a common vietnamese soup and theirs has a very complex and wonderful flavor. I felt it lacked heartiness though. I also second a previous reviewers recommendation of the Imperial Rolls. ”

“ I have only been once to the new slanted door location...and the pho that i LOVE was not as lovely as it was before...and about 2/3 of the size of when it was at Brannan & Embarcadero. I love the shaking beef, imperial rolls and thier lovely giger infused cocktails. I have never really liked thier desserts.
YES they are very expensive...and i have tried the shaking beef at 2 other vietnamese restaurants and have been sadly dissapointed...so it is worth it to try it at least once. The imperial rolls you can find at a lot of places and they are equally as good for 1/2 the price...so hard to say if it is worth it all in all. I have heard not so positive reviews from foodie friends of mine...that they are just not as happy with the new location/service/quality and they LOVED it before...so I can't say what its like now. ”

“ Loved the Slanted Door when they were on Brannan since I live right next door, but the new location in the Ferry Building is amazing. Charles Phan is kicking some serious culinary ass...everyone raves about the shaking beef, blah blah blah...but it's true, the food is phenominal. I've never had a bad meal there, even their pho is excellent @ lunch. The bartenders are very knowledgeable, and the wine list reflects what goes well with Phan's cooking. Pop in for a drink, order the ginger lemonade and order a couple of apps if you don't want to do the whole reservations/dinner thing. You won't be disappointed. ”

“ Has the best take on vietnamese-californian fusion cuisine in the Bay Area. Have always had wonderful dining experiences at the Slanted Door in the evenings. However, the quality of the food slips for Sunday lunches - both times I was there at this hour I was disappointed. As mentioned by many, their Imperial Rolls are outstanding. Almost all other dishes are flavorful and well-presented, including the duck, lamb and shaking beef. ”

“ First, in all fairness and warning to those who like what they call "authentic" vietnamese, you should know I do not. That being said, this place is one of my favorites. I always order the the shaking beef and any plain vegatables they are serving. The imperial rolls are fantastic. Everything tastes so fresh and simple. The ingredients seem of top notch quality. I love this place because I can go with my friends that like vietnamese and enjoy my meal. Their wine list is also really great. One of the few places you can get Navarro wines other than the winery and lots of good european choices. ”

“ (Bar only) We dropped in for a drink while waiting for the ferry. (It's not easy to find the door, at the Slanted Door.)There were several employees standing around behind the bar who seemed not to be bartenders. Eventually, one of them found us a bartender. Irish coffee? Can't do one of those. A dark rum and soda. No dark rum. A glass of chardonnay? Can't sell chardonnay by the glass, only by the bottle. We ended up with about half a medium size glass of some white wine, and a white rum and soda. A bottle of soda had to be purchased as this bar had no soda on tap, it has nothing on tap, not even water. In truth, the bartender tried to make the best out of a situation wherein some arrogant fool thinks this restaurant too cool to stock even the basics. We found the interior uncomfortable. The bar chairs were poor and the "lounge" seating in the bar makes folks place their drinks on foot stools. The overall effect is a decorator rip-off. The tab for the two "drinks" was $17.50. ”

“ Excellent Date Restaurant. However, it must be noted that this really isn't Vietmanese food. Although the food is excellent and I do recommend it, just be aware that it is not your typical Vietmanese menu. A bit pricey. But good. The quail was delicious. ”

“ The Slanted Door was pretty good. I've eaten at the Embarcadero location twice (once for dinner, and once for lunch). I think the best thing that I ordered was the imperial rolls (must try spring rolls next time). The shaking beef is pretty good, but I've had better. I don't think many vietnamese people would like this place, as it is somewhat "Americanized." I think I still had to wait for my table, even though I had a reservation. Hard to find parking around this area, though. Very hard to get a weekend reservation, especially for a large party. They have the cutest business cards though. ”

“ I have walked in several times at lunch and opted for a bar seat..where I actually prefer to eat sometimes..had an adult bevrage wached the show...I will not lameent the little undiscovered place that I knew back before bill clinton....halcyon days of valencia crawls past, because thats not useful. for me the food is and always has been ok..nothing more. sorry , I just dont buy the overproced hype on this place. At the end of the day its a noodle house, albiet a good one..but its a noodle house...sure they have lots of other things...and a bar and a view and a buzz and ...like i say I eat here at lunch somedays at the bar...cant be all bad! ”

“ While I'll concede that the current Ferry Building location is not quite as charming as the original in the Mission, the quality of the food and the excellent service make the Slanted Door one of the best dining experiences in the city. The food manages to be both authentic and refined (filet mignon for the shaking beef and Liberty Farm duck). Don't go here expecting cheap vietnamese food or if you don't like "upscale" dining. Enjoy the Slanted Door for the overall experience, from the drinks, food, atmosphere, and service. P.S. If you don't want to break the bank, get more appetizers and vegetable dishes and limit your meat dishes (which are a little pricey). ”

“ Yes, it takes weeks to get a weekend reservation. Yes, it is trendy. Yes, it is loud. Yes, it is pricier than your neighborhood vietnamese restaurant. But if you try the jicama/grapefruit salad and lemongrass tofu you'll fall in love! I've been to the restaurant 3 times (at 2 locations) and have had an amazing meal each time. Friendly, knowledgeable wait staff... although one food runner tried to deliver the same (incorrect) dish to us twice. Food is served family style. The sticky rice dessert is amazing. ”

“ I hate to say it, but I really disliked this place. I did enjoy the original location on Valencia Street, but the Embarcadero location is way too sterile for my taste. I've had better vietnamese food for a fraction of the price out in the Sunset. I think it's way over-rated. ”

“ stuuchef,
you are not missing anything...if i wanted overpriced chinese food i'll go to the Tonga Room (at least i can dance there)...take mediocre food, sell it with flair and people will rush there, and rant & rave about it...SFmiss says the Orange Blossom cosmo is devine...hmmm.... ”

“ Am I missing something? I just don't understand how such a mediocre restaurant can be in such high demand. I've only been here once, but there's a reason for that. I thought the food was pretty plain and uninspired. The uber-swank interior just drove the "all show" part of it home for me. I would have given this a neutral, but the fact I had to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance for this place just blows my mind. ”

“ Before they moved from their interim place on the Embarcadero, I was in heaven. You could waltz in at any time in the late afternoon and sit right down for an amazing meal. Now, with this stunning view and major foot traffic, it's all over. But the food is still really great and the wine list is singular. ”

“ don't believe the hype. Save your dough and check out one of a number of other, better, more enjoyable dining experiences. You don't have to be packed in like a sardine to get a good dinner. ”

“ Great food, location and atmosphere (although it's a bit noisy). However, I'd say it's a little overrated, and not worth a 2 hour wait. Would make great takeout. ”

“ Food was excellent. The place is very trendy. The fact that you have to make reservations A WEEK ahead of time will increase your expectations to unreasonable levels, because the place really isn't that fancy. Still a great experience though, nicely balanced wine list, nice view of the bay. The bar is beautiful, i'd go there just for a drink.

“ I think it has slipped since moving from Guerrero. The food prices are steep, the service is somewhat off on the last two trips there. Both times I had to wait 20 minutes for the first dish and both times they brought the wrong dish. Then I had to wait 15 more minutes and finally, my dish(s) arrived! There was never any compensation like "let's buy you a glass of wine!" or "this appetizer is on the house." Rather it was like "you should be thankful that we let you sit here at our fabulous restaurant". Personally, Ahn Hong is more authentic, 1/10th of the price, and service is better. The decor is stunning and the bathrooms are beautiful though. It's a good spot to go to the bathroom when at the Farmer's market though (shhhh!) ”
