Maritime East ("ME") is a WONDERFUL new addition to Berkeley's dining scene. Taking the place of the rather old and tired Zak's, ME (there's a "Maritime" located in SF, hence the name) serves up wonderfully prepared and beautifully presented fruits of the sea (and does an impressive job with terrestrial fare as well). My friends and I had a feast, we tried numerous appetizers/starters, each ordered and shared a different entree, and tried all three of ME's dessert options. The pizza with unagi and spagetting squash was innovative and interesting, the various fish courses I tried were perfectly prepared - succulent and moist, the salmon lox appetizer was unlike any "lox" I've ever had before - it was a thick cut, mildly cured, moist and subtly flavored piece of salmon. I ventured out for my entree and tried beef cheek for the first time - incredibly tender and flavorful. Finally, the desserts were excellent as well - a fabulous cappuccino oriented chilled divinity, a pear pancake Review #20563

I recently enjoyed a wonderful evening at Maritime East, a great new addition to the food scene in Berkeley. Maritime offers fine dining with special (but not exclusive) focus on seafood- my favorite. I was able to taste a wide variety of items on the menu, and particularly enjoyed the Dukkah spiced flatbread which is deliciously flavorful with the “Chopped” Salad which includes organic chicory, quince, and hazelnuts. We also tried a special wood-fired pizza topped with spaghetti squash and BBQ eel, which was unique and tasty. For my entree I enjoyed a nice-sized portion of Wild hawaiian Ono served with divine creamed leeks & winter greens, and fingerling potatoes. Though I was quite full when our desserts, a pear tart and mocha mousse came I couldn't help eat them up too. Our dining experience was really nice, and I look forward to returning to Maritime East. The hip younger sister restaurant delivering inventive (wild & sustainable) seafood creations and unique pizzas from a wood burning oven in Berkeley. We started with the Dukkah Spiced Flatbread, light and flavorful. I enjoyed the black mussels also prepared in the wood-burning oven with an unique harrissa vinaigrette. For my main, I choose the Petrale Sole and I'm glad I did. A perfectly pan fried generous piece of fish a top roasted and puree cauliflower, topped with a sea-bean grape salad and drizzled with brown butter. Oh my, this was good. The sweet and roasted flavors danced around the delicate fish. We ordered one of each of the 3 desserts, of course Mark's Mothers coconut cream pie, a pear tart topped with vanilla ice cream and a dark chocolate cappuccino mousse. It was the perfect end to a delightful meal. I recommend and will return. Enjoy! Review #20533

Coconut Cream Pie ALERT!, if you love Coconut cream pie, I think you'll love "Mark's Mom's receipt" It's out of this world. As a recent guest of Maritime East, Angela and I got to try many of their entrees. I really enjoyed the Inkokt Lox, they bring out this large hunk of lox with this yummy cream sauce, everybody said look at the size of that lox. I ordered the Grilled Hanger Steak, the portion was large, flavorful and juicy, and I also enjoyed the root vegetable gratin, which accompanied my steak. The seafood chowder is yummy; they make it to order with lots of fresh seafood & clams. One dish was flat to my palette, it was the pizza with spaghetti squash & leeks, next time I'll try the pizza with smoked Tuna. Friendly service and a large menu make Maritime a fun destination.
