“ Loud, full of the same kinds of people...you know yuppy blokes and gals with the same haircuts and the Banana Republic uniforms on. I think out of about 50 men I saw three devient hair cuts. On to the food...well I can definately say that it is great food. If the portion size for the mac and cheese wasn't measured I could have easily made a pig of myself! The service was great, the food was better and the company...well if you plan on chatting with someone during the meal then plan on yelling. I couldn't hear anything unless it was yelled at me. Felt like a football match..with better food and less beer being spilt on me.
Started with: Duck Spring Rolls, yummy salty goodness! Tasty stuff! I could have had that as the meal.
Continued with: Mac-N-Cheese, unpretentious dish with just the right amount of sharpness and made for comfort not for speed! delicious!
My entree was Pork...but man I am confident in any of the dishes.
Ended with: Banana bread pudding...smokin'! Ok if you ”

“ Home is a bit on the casual side, but I was really surprised at how good the food was. I didn't eat anything special (a cobb salad with chicken, egg, bacon, avocado, and tomatoes-$12), but I felt like I got a good sized meal that was light, yet filling. I also shared an order of corn bread with honey butter that was absolutely melting like a warm chocolate cake. Boyfriend had an enormous plate of homey pot roast with horseradish cream, which he devoured. Home's beer options left something to be desired, but I ended up with a Pyramid Heff for about $4, so it's not terrible. Home isn't the kind of place to take someone special, but it will probably become a new staple for me on nights when I want to go out with my significant other for some inexpensive but dinner-service food. Besides, since Home is a little bit crowded and noisy (noisy meaning people talking loudly -- not techno music-noisy), it made me feel like I had actually 'gone out' that night. ”

“ $8.00 for valet parking?! Yuck.
But the rest of the experience at Home was great. The service was especially good. They were extremely accommodating to our large table. We sat in the back with the fireplace, which I never knew existed. The heat lamps kept the room toasty warm and cozy.
The early bird special can't be beat. A soup or salad, entree, and dessert brownie for about $10...AND a glass of wine. The only thing? When they say early, they mean EARLY. We were there at 6 and they were already sold out of the special entree. Wah.
Oh, and the warm lava chocolate cake? Don't miss it.

Always a great place for dinner. I love the back bar and dinning area. I have always been welcomed there even alone and they were always on top of it. The pot roast and the Mac and cheese are my 2 favorite. I also like their butternut squash soup which is very tasty on a cold night. They are also children friendly and I usually go there with my friends who have kids.

I love Home. Their Chicken pot pie is my favorite (I think it is the Tuesday night special)...big portion with gooey insides in a crisp pie shell. I also love their cornbread (with butter and honey) and their mac and cheese. Nice staff as well. ”

“ Stick-to-your ribs cooking for a reasonable price. Good service. Definitely agree with Flightplan about making a reservation through Opentable.com as it can get unpredictably busy, sometimes even just after opening. I liked the homemade bread & jam with brunch. Memorably rich & satisfying mac-n-cheese for dinner and tasty, but hyper-oily hash for brunch (though great use of leftover pot roast meat!). Closely located near MUNI, if the hassle of parking seems overwhelming. Great casual restaurant that's not trying too hard to please... ”

“ this wasn't bad. the food wasn't anything to shout about, but it was decent and a good price. i went here before a class and wanted something relaxed in a nice atmosphere, and this fit the bill. they have a weekday earlybird special between 5&6 pm which includes an app, entree and desert and glass of wine for $10.99. that day was a ceasar salad, verde pork tostadas, and a chocolate layer cake. it was pretty nice and a good price. and the waitress was just so friendly and happy. i enjoyed the food and was able to take my time without feeling rushed. ”

“
I keep going "Home." While it isn't the best restaurant in SF, it is a great place for a comfortable meal. I usually visit "Home" about once a month. They offer great meals at a very good value. What's more - they are dedicated to using local and organic ingredients - at much lower prices than other restaurants who also use top quality ingredients. Their Niman Ranch hamburgers are delicious. Their traditional dishes are also very nice. The wine list isn't fantastic, but they have a reasonable corkage (I think it's $10) and that provides a nice option. I also enjoy their desserts and there are some 1/2 order of desserts that are available if only you ask. Home is the perfect Sunday or Monday night dining spot - when you want to go out and have a nice meal but not all of the flash and glitter of a truly fine-dining establishment. It's much more comfortable than that - especially if you manage to get a booth. ”

“ I love Home. I've taken small groups there for birthdays and special events and have always had excellent service. I love the pot roast - it melts in your mouth. Great home cooking. They have some excellent specials depending on the night of the week - I love the fried chicken. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation on OpenTable. If you just show up, the wait might ruin your experience. ”

I went there for Sunday brunch and had the quiche which was amazing. The accustics is terrible though. Sat in a booth and could hardly hold a conversation with my friends over the noise! Might be ideal for a first date because the food is so fabulous and it won't be awkward if you don't know what to talk about. ”

“ I came here and got the early bird special (5pm-6pm). Food was awesome for the price. For about $11, I got a salad, pasta, cookies, and glass of wine. Wine was pretty good. Also ordered the mac and cheese...one of the best I've had. Would definitely go back! ”

“ You can't beat the early bird three-course prix fixe dinner for $10.99 (Mon-Fri 5-6pm). We got a fresh garbanzo, tomato, cucumber and arugula salad with a light vinaigrette for our starter. Our entree was a mediterranean farfalle (all vegetarian, but fresh olives, tomatoes and other vegetables.) For dessert, we got a good portion of raspberry cheesecake and that was pretty tasty. The house wine (which also comes with the prix fixe dinner) was Falling Water Merlot from New Zealand. It was very smooth and tasted like a $7 glass by itself, so they know their wines. I was very impressed and I'd go back in a heartbeat. Corkage is $15. ”

“ So I have done home on union a few times and I decided to try the one on Market. No change in the formula. Great service great atmosphere and the food, the food, the food........ I over ate 3 fold... Started with mac & cheese, green beans, corn bread and potstickers all of which were outstanding.... I would starve a small village for the cornbread..(j/k)(maybe).... After all of that I wasn't really hungry anymore... But I already ordered so what did I do? You guessed it! I ate it all.............Ummmmm I love food especially good food....

“ Home rocks. First off, it's probably the best Mac and cheese in SF. Add in the consistently executed comfort food stand bys along with several higher end dishes and you've got a restaurant that scales to most occasions. Bring the kids for an affordable and fast dinner or bring a date and indulge with cocktails, starters, mains and dessert get away for under $100. And a great time to boot! And besides the good looking space, the kicker is that there's an attached (pay) parking lot. Parking in the Castro can be a challenge so you're always covered here if you tire of circling the hood trolling for spots. The down side is that the tables are quite close together and it can get loud. But in all quite worth it! ”

“ Good food! I've been there about 7 times within the last 6 months. The service is OK, but the food is really good. I'm not big with a lot of the food from the menu, but that macaroni is so good! The Rosemary chicken is very yummy! Sometimes we'll call in an order for macaroni. It's worth it! I'd recommend this to everyone. If you don't find anything on the menu you would like, then at least order the mac. ”

“ the problem with the castro as an eating destination is that they dont shine anywhere they just do. this is a good example. like chow they are about american comfort food. and it is good. but not great. flat iron steak is good and mac and cheese essential. fries soso pasta overcooked and over herbed. hyper sweet deserts. beer list could be longer. ”

“ Great place for a large group - I was there with a group of 12, with a table reservation in the back room by the fireplace. While we waited for everyone to show up we had some cocktails at the bar - great drinks - my favorite is the Twister, but the Pink Pussy cat is also good. We had some sloppy Joe's Dip for appetizer... surprisingly tasty, but we were also starving. I had the Burger, wich was simple, but done right (medium rare, please). I had a side of Mac 'n Cheese, which has been mentioned as one of their signature dishes - definitely lives up to the hype... very cheesy! Other menu items ordered in my group, which I tasted: Meatloaf, Flank Steak, Tuna Casserole (special of the day) - all very tasty. The place was pretty noisy, but with a large group that's not a problem ”

“ I went to Home in the Castro twice in the last 2 weeks, once for dinner and once for Brunch. Food was excellent both times. For dinner I had chicken w/a sweet potato puree and a delicious cider sauce. For brunch - a bacon, cheddar and egg croissant with home fries. Croissant was excellent - although potatoes were a little undercooked. Very reasonably priced wine list and great atmosphere. Service was a little slow during dinner but it can be expected as it was a busy Friday night. Service during brunch was excellent - waiter gave us some delicious breakfast breads to sample. I would definitely go back for both dinner and brunch (I'd like to try the make your own bloody mary bar). ”

“ I went there for the first time on a crowded Friday evening. The host was able to seat us immediately. For the appetizer, we had the duck spring rolls. It sounded good on the menu, but it was the opposite; the rolls were stuffed with more duck than anyone can handle. On the other hand, the entrees we had were great. Nothing special; just good old "home" style cooking. As another reviewer mentioned, it was a little pricey for what you're getting. Overall, my experience with Home was very good. Service was superb; we were in-and-out of there in an hour, just enough time to make it for our concert. ”

“ We went here was a very large group and got the back room. It was still super noisey. The pre-fixe menu was pretty good, the salad was great. I had the meatloaf w/mashed potatoes and carmelized carrots. The presentation of the food wasn't so appetizing, thank goodness it tasted a lot better than it looked. That evening, they had guava sorbet that was fabulous. The banana bread pudding was moist and tasted like banana bread. The seared tuna tasted better than it looked also. ”

“ i remember the first time i went, me and a friend shared the meatloaf and chicken pot pie. the meatloaf was pretty good, i just wish there was a bottom crust in the potpie, it seems so lazy when they lay over a store bought frozen puff pastry topping. because really it's just chicken soup under pillsbury dough. but i do remember them having the best cornbread. when we went back the second time, they didn't have it on the menu anymore, the server said the pastry chef messed up the recipe? okay? the food wasn't consistent, and the service was whatever. they should rename the place, go home. ”

“ Like Blue farther down the street, it specializes in bland, Midwestern "comfort food" for those who are apparently overwhelmed by more exotic delights that the City has to offer. To be fair, though, it's better than Blue: the mac & cheese is really, really delicious, and so are the fries. Not my cup of tea, generally, although if it is, you probably won't be disappointed by what they offer. ”

“ Home is well named since the food here tastes like it was made at someone?s home! Nothing special here, the meatloaf was good, moist and flavorful, with a generous portion on the plate, Rosemary chicken was a little overcooked, but had great flavor. This small place looks homey and seems to have a good following. Our service was quick and attentive with plates and drinks brought quickly after our order. The cheesecake was good and the menu has something for everyone! The place is a tad noisy for intimate conversation, but the dining room feeling brings a warm friendly feeling like you were at your grandmother?s old dining room back south somewhere. The prices are very reasonable to city standards, the servings are generous, and the only down side is the parking in the area, good luck. Should there be a parking spot near, grab it and show up for dinner! You hear! ”

“ I really love going to Home. I especially love their mussels in garlic, white wine broth. Check out their ceviche, very fresh. You cannot come here and not try their mac and cheese! It is probably the most delicious food you'll ever order as a side dish. Ultra-mega-yummy! Negatives are it's too busy and the service is almost lacking, otherwise, you'll love it. I swear. ”

“ Home has a great early bird special which I tried to hit one time, but missed by 10 minutes. We decided to try it and was not disappointed. Home offers good basic comfort food, and we were comforted by the pot roast and mac and cheese. Amazing home cooking...maybe not, but a decent value. Had several of the cocktails which weren't amazing...but they were cheap so we indulged in many. Worth checking out for a basic nite out. ”

“ I love this place. Great comfort food, very affordable. From 5-6 they have a great deal - $10.99 for 3 courses and a glass of wine. It is a pre-set menu that changes nightly. However, be prepared to feel like a grandma/grandpa if you do get the early bird special. They also have some very fun drinks. The atmosphere is fun and the waitstaff friendly. “ This place doesn't turn me on in the least. Aside from feeling like the big portions were meant to put me to sleep, the memorable aspect of this "restaurant" is that it doesn't show as much stainless as your average cafeteria. The pumpkin soup was sugared blender squash. The porkchop was reasonable thick, but blah with a sugary glaze sauce. The menu is to taste what TV dinners are to haute cuisine. Foregoing dessert, the watery coffee put me out through the door for the last time. ”

“ Not impressed with the food at all. The pumpkin soup was way too sweet, like pumpkin pie puree. I ordered the porkchop medium-cooked, but it was basically seared on the outside. The inside was raw. There was no flavor at all. The waiter was kind enough to bring me another one, but it was no better. After my experience with the appetizer and the entree, why would I take my chances with dessert? What this restaurant lacks is a cook who really knows what homecooking is all about. ”

“ One of the best comfort food restaurants in town. Nothing extravagant, just good quality eats. The mac'n'cheese is the best ever & if you're able to go on a Thursday night, get the Country Fried Chicken special. The juiciest piece of chicken you'll ever eat. & who can complain about their $5 daily drink specials. Lastly, I'm a sucker for their banana bread pudding. If the entree/apps fill you up, you can even get a half order of the dessert. ”
