“ I'm a dessert addict so I had to try these cream puffs. It was large and oozing with custard which I loved. Big mistake, DO NOT inhale the powdered sugar when taking a bite! You will cough it up and make a fool of yourself. I did it once, now I'm on a crusade to warn the rest of the world. ”

“ Thankfully I am in shape, but if this place was closer to me... I would have a lot of trouble. I love their monthly flavors!!! A coffee creampuff or pumpkin is probably the gift from above on a hot day. I know this weekend I had just one and a nice iced tea, and I entered the lower reaches of heaven. The crispy outside mixed with the coolness of the pudding inside makes for a sweet dance in your mouth. The people are very nice and its very cool to look at. ”

“ 5/07 Thu 5 pm. No lines at Beard Papa! Got 2 cream puffs in 5 min: vanilla bean ($1.75) and strawberry flavor ($2.10) of the week. Walked over to the sunny Yerba Buena park and sat down near the waterfall. Quickly took out the puff with the paper pouch from the sack, and held gently. Next gently lifted up half of the puff from the pouch and approached with the mouth. Made a small bite gently each time. The puff was not stone cold yet, but semi-crispy, soft and cushy. The amount of cream was just right, tasted semi-sweet, and not overloaded with sugar or fatty stuff. This is the mama of all puffs! The vanilla was good, but the strawberry was even better. At the end, some cream was left inside the pouch. But discreet licking took care of that. Thanks to the pouch my hand was not messy! Where do they say it is japanese? On the website, the owner is identified as Muginoho Co of Japan. No wonder, that fits the legacy of japanese rendition of western pastry. (beware of map error) ”

“
Can't say anything bad about this place, however I am not so blown away as everyone else. That said, they make a darn good cream puff (which, when chocolate-dipped, they call an eclair). I had a funny experience asking them for a freshly dipped eclair (the chocolate had not dried yet and was in a fridge to do so). They looked at me funny, and then said ok. I then watched the ensuing circus-like dance as every staff member attempted to handle the still-wet-chocolate-covered pastry, get it filled with cream, and not get themselves covered in the chocolate. They all failed. One of them almost dropped it on the floor. But it made it safely to me in a bag, which promptly stole most of my chocolate from me when I removed it from this bag. It was not a well-conceived idea. But hey, there is nothing like hot melted chocolate. I apparently had my entire face covered by it once I was done devouring it. ”

“ I was walking by on my way to do some shopping and noticed NO LINE at the Beard Papa counter. I thought I'd better get it while I can without the wait. I have read about people waiting for 20+ minutes to get their puff fix. I ordered a Vanilla with vanilla bean filling. They served it in a wrapper rather than a plate, which when held, all the filling slides to the down end. Nevertheless I ventured forward into my puff experience, slightly crisp then soft creamy vanilla custard, very nice. I was not expecting the thick custard as I'm used to the lighter european puff. I enjoyed it and will visit again when in the hood, might even pick up a dozen for a party sometime.

“ Mmm mmm. Creampuffs. Who doesn't like a creampuff. These are light and airy ? very surprising and utterly delicious. I like the vanilla better than the chocolate. The vanilla cream was smooth and silky, where as the chocolate seemed a bit grainy. And the puffs are huge! Definitely go when you have some room to spare in your belly or go to share! ”

“
I first saw Beard Papa on one of my trips to NY. It was next door to Famous Joe's pizza. It seemed really clean and popular. The name was one of those mysterious japanese/english creation that makes you smile and grimace at the same time. It's what the hosts of Attack of the Show would refer to as "Engrish" But it's effective, as evidenced by the long queues formed by zealots here and in NY. Do I count myself as one of Beard Papa's fans? No. It was ok, but not oishi. The best item is the melty chocolate cake, but you can have a better version of this offering at Sweet Inspiration or at Triptych. If you have time to spare, go ahead and fall in line with a friend. Swap stories and tell jokes for about 20 minutes. When you get to the counter make sure to order the chocolate concoction. I doubt you'd be back too soon. ”

“ A traveling salesperson trying to score an account with me offered up a dozen Beard Papa treats as a bribe. He didn't get the account, but I got my fix. The cream puff are (and this is coming from someone who previously hated cream puffs) OFF THE HOOK, as is the chocolate cake. And the bizarre name and logo cannot be beat. They only add to the appeal. ”

“ Yes, it's expensive and yes, there's a line. Is it worth it? Sure, why not. It's great for a special treat after a show at the Metreon or make it part of your excursion to SFMoMA or the Museum of Crafts. I'm not sure I'd make a trip downtown just for a cream puff, but then I'm more of a beignet guy.
Everyone raves about the vanilla, but I loved the milk tea. You have to get a vanilla and a flavor of the day. I mean, if your going to stand in that line, don't just get one. That would be silly.

“ I first heard of their cream puff in Singapore. According to my brother, I got to try it. Well, I'm not too much of a sweets kind of person so I missed my chance in Singapore. Recently, I heard that it is coming to town, and after hearing so many people raved about their cream puffs, I guess I should try it. And I did, after standing in line for 15 minutes. The filling is very rich and buttery and I love the tiny specks of vanilla. However, I am not so sure if it is worth $1.75. ”

“ Very much comparable to the japanese interpretation of the cream puff, so it is wise not to make any comparisons to American or european versions. Very luscious custard and the pastry was the perfect encasement. When I telephoned them at 7:45 AM one morning, they kindly accepted my order of 3 dozen cream puffs and allowed me to pick them up at 8:30 AM. They usually open at 10 AM. They graciously threw in another cream puff, my breakfast, for me and gave me the friendliest customer service when I arrived. Thanks Beard Papa!

“ A friend of mine so thoughtfully brought me one of these wonderful treats. I was stuffed from a big lunch and brought it home and placed it into the refrigerator. I took what I thought was going to be one bite that night....well you know what happened....I ate the WHOLE thing!

“ cream puffs -- now how can you make that wrong? I loved Trader Joe's and Costco version of it too but when you have vanilla bean in the vanilla cream puff it's simply amazing the taste! I'd advise only one. It's definitely rich and sweet. They fill the puffs right in front of you. I know we need more of these shops in san francisco. Those lines are ridiculous just to get a puff!! :) It's worth the taste for newcomers! ”

“ Uno what, these are tasty little bastards. I'm not sure if I'll pick Beard Papa over Tartine anyday, but their custard cream puffs are pretty damn tasty. I know the cream puff purists will cry foul that these are not cream puffs...more like custard puffs, but tasty nonetheless. My GF was kind enough to scoop them up for me, so I didn't have to deal with the lines...ALL GOOD. The chocolate was nice, so was the eclair but the vanilla custard was shining star. I wish she grabbed 2 of them...I'll be back, even with that damn line!

“ I loved these cream puffs! I got it straight out of the oven and it was so good! The vanilla custard was not overly sweet at all.. Perfect. They have all these different flavors now that I just have to go back and try. ”

“ Well, I enjoyed my vanilla cream puff quite a bit. It was very busy when I was here and they were filling the cream puffs to order but it did look like the unfilled cream puffs were made well in advance as there were racks and racks of them behind the counter. Despite the lines and the excessive heat of the day, the cashier and counter help were quite pleasant. These cream puffs are nice treat to take over to Yerba Buena park to have with a cup of coffee from the Starbucks there. I'm looking forward to trying some of the rotating specialty flavors. ”

“ Update: OK...I'm warming up to these. The caramel and vanilla bean are my favs...for now :0)
Great customer service but the cream puff itself was nothing special in my opinion. Yes, maybe I AM spoiled. I grew up in Europe and am use to FRESH FRESH FRESH yummy pastries from the corner pastry shop.

“ These are yummy, but average cream puffs. The vanilla custard was my favorite. It was just sweet enough, and had a rich vanilla flavor. The double chocolate eclair was over kill. I too saw an assembly line of pre filled pastry puffs, not filled when I ordered. Again, the vanilla custard was scrumptious, but the pastry itself tasted like frying oil that really needed to be changed.
UPDATE
I gave these guys a second chance and changed my neutral to a positive. I must have gone on an off day. My pastry the second time around was flaky and fresh, and the vanilla custard cured my sweet tooth. ”

“ After hearing SOOO much about this place and how long the lines cane get.. I know I had to try it out myself since I LOVE sweets! I was actually disappointed with mine. Maybe because the cream puff was not fresh out of the oven so I will try it again and ask if I could possibly get one out from the oven.. And I also thought they don't fill it till you order it? Well people are wrong because I while I was standing in line, they were filling a lot of them up when the line wasn't even long... So when I ordered mine, they gave me the ones that had already been filled. The vanilla pastry cream was good but my puff part of the dessert got soggy from being filled before I even ordered it. All in all.. I expected more from Beard Papa but will try the other flavors that are coming soon. ”

“ Beard Papa's is a japanese bakery that has finally reached San Francisco. Its specialty is cream puffs, airy baseball-sized pastry filled magically with lucious custard. The vanilla flavored ones suit me just fine, but you can also, theoretically (the more ecclectic flavors haven't quite made it to the SF location as of this writing) choose pumpkin, milk tea, green tea, or other flavors, which rotate weekly. The chocolate powder dusted on top of the chocolate puffs has a purple hue, and the chocolate cream isn't as dazzling as the vanilla. If you've seen business people scurrying late to the office with a little yellow cardboard box, it's probably filled with a dozen Beard Papa treats (about $20 for a dozen). Eclairs, among other sweets, fill out the menu. Fun and yummy. ”
