“
I wish this place was better than I found it. Possibly I just love the sign, but I wanted it to be amazing. Which it wasn't. It was decent, but that's the best I can do. My eggplant sandwich was boring and my partner has a noodle dish which was ok, but we can do much better at home. Service was very slow. ”

“ I really want to love Herbivore. Really. Some of my favorite people swear by it, and it is packed all the time. And I promise you I love all the veggies no less than the fluffy animals. This was my third visit, and at boring it was my best meal yet. I thought if we had taken our salad and spring rolls home and doctored them up they would have been pretty good even. The ingredients were super fresh, but the waitress was stale.

“ I've been to Herbivore several times since they opened on Valencia St, and it's never really done it for me. It always seems like it ought to be better than it is, somehow. I do have a bunch of friends who really like it, though.

“ I would say that this is like the vegetarian equivalent to Lion's/Denny's with a healthier twist. The ravioli w/ pesto was recommended to me and was quite good! I love their salad dressing!!! I would go back - reasonably priced, average vegan food. ”

“ Firstly the cigarette smoke in the rear seating area from the staff taking breaks forced us to move tables. Then the hinge on the front door was broken so the door did not shut and a cold draft blew on us and other customers (a bonding experience as we all took turns to close the door).
Our waitress barely visited our table and never smiled. We wanted to get desert to go and more drinks but she never even offered.
Even though the restaurant closed at 11pm they started putting chairs on tables around us at 10.45 (not very pleasant or welcoming, we were eating as quick as we could!).
My green salad was uninspiring (very big pieces of romaine lettuce and 2 cherry tomatoes), the bland coconut noodle dish (lots of noodles with some shredded carrot, 3 small broccoli florets and some burnt tofu) came with very dry chewy ciabatta bread, past its sell by date perhaps. My husbands ravioli was swimming in far too much pesto. The food presentation was nonexistent, not even a sprig of ”

“
Had a working lunch here. It took a long time to get our water and utensils. I had to make eye contact with a guy walking by before we were given either. It was a very long time before the waiter came to take our order. We were slightly post lunch rush, so the place was not packed by any means. Service was not good. After eating, we had papers out on the table, and finally ended up pushing our dishes up against the wall because no one was coming to clear them. I had pad thai with peanut sauce. Way too much peanut sauce for the dish and the peanut sauce was a bit heavy. I won't order it again. I may, or may not, come back to try something else. It was really loud in there, and the service was far too slow and disinterested. My lunch date neither raved nor complained about her soup. Her portion was very very big. I was relieved to get out onto Valencia Street to give my ears a rest. ”

“
I love Herbivore - after going many times, I've learned to stick with the couple items that I love. Some other items are a bit bland. I order the red curry with brown rice ($9.50) and the indonesian noodle salad ($6.95). ”

“ I went with a pretty large group of people, and the service was good, but the food was hit or miss, mine was bland and tasted like they didn't use any seasoning whatsoever. Others enjoyed their entrees quite a bit so it seems like there are some good things on the menu, you just have to find them. The portions are huge but who wants to take it home if it isn't any good to begin with.

“ I'm a carnivore for sure..... Especially after going here. Lots of stuff that sounded good but when I was finished I was left emotionless. Maybe I'm too much of a non veggie to appreciate

“ Took my out of town vegetarian friends here for a late dinner.
One ordered the moussaka. He loved it. I thought it was kind of bland.
Another friend ordered the lasagna and said it was bland and the noodles were too mushy. I ordered the Miso soup and had to send it back for them to re-microwave as it was barely warm. Not good.

“ love the food. hit and miss on the staff. some are very friendly, some are inattentive at best. but i love the food, so i'll keep going back. i usually get the seitan sandwich with the rosemary potatos on the side. it's too big to eat the whole thing, so yay for leftovers! you can choose the spread on it. their tacos are also fabulous, as are the veggie mix appetizer and the fresh spring rolls. there's another herbivore on divisadero that has better service and the same menu. ”

“ I recently had lunch here, after walking by it 9,000 times as I live in the neighborhood. I thought that it was OK -- we started with the spring rolls, for which the peanut sauce was very good. However, I felt it was too chewy for a spring roll. The portions were plentifull, but the consistency was a bit off. I followed with the Portebello BBQ sandwhich which was excellent and I would get again. The fries were well seasoned and the sandwhich was delicious. The service, though, left much to be desired. I almost wish we had to go to the counter to order and they would just deliver the food to our table. I never felt as if the server was actually watching our table. I would go back for takeout, but that is all. ”

“ Pretty place...never a good meal may you have. Flavorless tripe! Oh with out meat. The place hires attractive women with hairy armpits dangling over my food. The price is crap for vegitables. I think most vegittarians would be insulted by the lack of spice. Healthy living is great and vegitables should be eaten more. Just not in the obsessive context that people do it in San Francisco. get off your high horse all you veggie folks. 50 Million years of evolution can't be wrong. Get some flesh on that dish, or at least pay for delicous veggie food in SF. After all, it is a glorified food park now! I am not afraid of giving this place a red dot. After all even vegans deserve the truth, they have been lied to enough! If that lady loses a pit hair in my food then I might be charged for a meat dish! ”

“ Went recently with a group of 4 and was the most (only?) one pleased with my meal, and a beans, rice, and grilled veggie entree isn't hard to master. We were generally disappointed by lack of flavor in our asian stir fry and noodle dishes, and the salad was poor. Thumbs up on a truly decadent german Chocolate Cake, and to for reasonable prices and not charging (us) a corkage fee.

“ love the vegan carrot and chocolate cake! i have given herbivore a lot of tries and tend to be not so impressed with the food. steer clear from the pasta dishes and breakfast. i have had a good grilled vege sandwich. all and all i give it a neutral rating because i just don't get consistently good meals. come for dessert. ”

“ (Sorry, this review was for the Divisidero location of Herbivore, not the Mission location. Based on my experiences at Divis I sure wouldn't travel for Herbivore. And now that I'm out of the city and expect something *great* when I come in, I'll not be going to Herbivore again.) ”

“ I LOVE this place. As a life long vegetarian who struggles to find decent, affordable, healthy food at restaurants, Herbivore is heaven sent - nowhere else have I found as many items on a single menu that I can actually eat - and that are appetizing. ALSO...for the vegan, or simply "healthy conscious" it's a great place to explore new foods, like tempeh and seitan, in "traditional ways" like wraps and sandwiches. Of course the have great yummy dishes, I love the lemon grass vegetables, for affordable prices. I appreciate that they provide options like noodles or brown rice, and fun appetizers like seasoned almonds or potatoes. And, you can get a class or carafe of organic wine at "normal" prices. Then...there are the vegan deserts (take that look off your face)...the german chocolate cake is to die for!
Went out for a nice evening dinner for two: appetizers, wine, dinner, desert for under $50 - not sure I can do that at too many places. Service can be iffy, but it won't keep me away ”

“ Herbivore has good vegetarian food. A bit on the pricey end of things (at least to me), but it is a good place to take a 1st or 2nd date, if s/he is nutty and crunchy. :) ”

“ I like meat. A lot. But i also enjoy the fake meats and i think Herbivore has a pretty darn good seitan sandwich. Their fresh squeezed juices are very good too. I think the brunch kinda' stinks though. ”

“ service is not so great; they are sweet but it is best to take out, anyways. food is yummy, esp, the bbq sandwhich, veggie burger and vietnamese spring rolls. love their (soy) thai iced tea. great place to go after Osento or just because. Reasonable prices. Giant portions. The soup is also wonderful as are the vegan cookies. It's worth going there pretty often. ”
