I will give this restaurant a positive review, but I felt that everything was overpriced. We didn't have to wait very long for a table for six, but the waitstaff seemed a bit haughty. The portions were somewhat on the small side, but everything tasted great. Review #21346

It was well worth the hype. The food was great and the service wonderful. The only complaint I have is that it's a bit too cramped. Make reservations in advanced. At least four weeks if you want a normal dinner time. Review #20958

I have eaten at Delfina several times and I consider Delfina to be one of the best if not the best italian restaurants SF. It is definitely a destination restaurant. The food is excellent and the best I have had even in comparison to New York, Chicago and Boston. The prices are reasonable and the service is fine. Highly recommended. Make reservations well ahead of time. Review #20754

My 1st time here Dec 2007. We had the salmon and the grilled calamari apps. The salmon was ridiculously salty, we left 1/2 and it was taken off the bill. The calamari was PERFECTLY cooked and the bed of white beans ---fabulous...and also too salty...but not as salty as the salmon. The dungeness crab salad was very simple and clean...a tad expensive @ $15 and very little crab, but a nice balance of flavours. The warm olives were lovely and not salty at all! and i need to find a place to buy them! The wild nettle ravioli was nicely prepared, great flavours. The hanger steak was a dissappointment, it had a gamey quality to it and as opposed to a regular hanger this looked like a mini beef tenderloin and it came with OK frites...on the cold side. Overall i liked the quality but ya really gotta take a break on the salt Review #20546

One of the cal-italian institutions in the city. The inside of the restaurant is nice, but tables are all stuck close together. The dishes are not extraordinary, but are all pretty good, especially the homemade pastas. Solid value, considering the quality of the food. Review #19746

Delfina might just be my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. The food was amazing and the staff was excellent. My brother and I went to celebrate my recent promotion and we had the salt cod, the spaghetti with crab, the pork shoulder and two desserts! Everything we tasted was divine. One warning, for the two of us, we dropped $170 which did include a bottle of wine, but I'll be reserving this one for special occasions only. Review #18528

The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable about their food and wine. We had the crostini, boar salami and grilled squid for appetizers and then I had the mint tagilatelle with chanterelles and hubby had the seafood dish. The cheese selection plate was truly delicious and the cookies we shared were perfect with our coffee. I was really pleased with my dinner! Review #17976

Chicken is never my first, second, or even third choice on any menu; and the inclusion of mushrooms in a dish has never been a selling point. But Delfina has a roast chicken with royal trumpet mushrooms ($18) that was described upon first bite by my table-mate as "transcendent." This bird tastes as if it had been cooked in veal stock, then finished in a quart of demi-glace. I do declare those trumpet mushrooms a new vegetable unto themselves, almost asparagus-like in texture. We shared a first course of spiced merguez with lentils and pickled onions ($8.25), which I wish had been my main. I ordered a ravioli of prosciutto and marscarpone in lemon and butter ($14) that was really a dish for white wine drinkers. Divine, I suppose, but not the right choice for me. The espresso I sipped while waiting for a made-to-order cake had chocolate notes and depth rarely found outside european coffee houses. What surprised me was Delfina's un-prestigious interior design: clean but not glamorous. Review #17745

The food is simple but extremely well-done. I absolutely love the grilled calamari on white beans. The pasta is perfectly cooked, just al-dente. The wine list is accessible and not too expensive. One of my favorite restaurant in SF. Review #15690

Everyone must go to Delfina at least once. Reservations are a pain and a necessity on busy days/hours, but it's worth the nuisance. The food is delicious, amazing, perfectly portioned for people who want to taste everything without leaving the restaurant feeling like they ate too much. Equally important, the wine pairing is incredible. Worth every penny. Review #10940

The food is good and rustica but the service is just rustica. Our server arrived at the table after 15 minutes and stated only "We are out of the Porchetta tonight and in it's place we are offering roasted quail." There was a minute of silence and I said "I'd like a glass of the Pollo Rosso please ($6.75) and my friend would like the Q Hill Cab ($9.00)." We started out with the grilled sardine crostini ($8.50)which was okay but tasted as though it was prepared way in advance. Then we got the grilled calamari salad on a warm white bean salad ($8.75) and did not receive a clean plate in between. We split the greens with a light sherry vinaigrette ($7.00) and I had the ravioli with Bellwether sheeps milk mixed with dandelion greens, chard and sage ($13)in a sage butter. That was delicious! My friend had the roasted quail ($23) which was so-so according to her. We split the warm apple & quince tart ($11) but no candle appeared on it as I had requested for her birthday. 7 out of 10. Great food. Small portions (real italian meal: should order both Primi and Secondi). Went there and shared an appetizer with wife and each had a plate of pasta. delicious but after 5 bites, gone. Talked to the manager (Kristy?), very gracious. Offered to bring add'l food - I asked for the exact same dish again (but double the size). Full, satisfied, and happy. She also comped us 2 glasses of wine and a dessert (the panna cotta is spectecular). Could have left hungry and would have told my friends - but now I'm a big fan. Just have to be careful to order enough food (which makes this an expensive restaurant). Minuses: Very noisy, hard to park, a little bit cramped. Review #9510

What a treat! Delfina has been around for a while and seems to keep on going. Fantastic, combination of pure ingredients with perfect technique, and decorated with edginess and sophistication. Reservations won't come easy, but if you plan it right you can make it in. The seasonal menu changes daily, but you can expect to see grilled calamari an assortment of interesting salads lightly dressed and Northern italian pastas that rely on a only a few terrific ingredients to burst out with flavor. "Superb," "awesome," "perfect," "heavenly" were some of the words that I used when our waiter came over several times during our meal to ask how we liked the food. The staff was extremely friendly and very gracious. The food was remakably flavorful, prepared exquisitely with the freshest ingredients, and infused with a well-balanced blend of herbs and spices. It isn't very often that I left a restaurant feeling wholesome, fulfilled, and with a smile on my face. Review #9030

One of the BEST restaurants in town. I've probably eaten there a hundred times, and the worst thing I ever had was simply VERY GOOD, not Craig's usual orgasmic deliciousness that leaves the table utterly speechless. Craig, the Chef, is truly a genius. Thank you man for all the good eats!!!!!!!! ALSO... Love the staff- fun, friendly, informative!!! Review #8063

after hearing all the rave reviews about this place i wanted to take a friend here for his bday. the restaurant packs in the people, so you have to squeeze in and out. you even after to move your table so you don't disrupt the people dining besides you. we had the steak/frites, the calamari, and the pancetta salad. the food was okay, not bad but it tasted like the cook went triggerhappy on the salt. the desserts were good, we had the lemon flan, the chocolate cake, and the nectarine tart. i was happy that they put candles on all desserts! because it's so busy it can take awhile to get the server's attention, but overall the staff are nice. on sunny days, it would be better to get a table out on the patio. clean restrooms. My date and I met up with some of his friends; a guy in a bad wig and cheesy sunglasses, the girl on his arm was a toothpick. We started with a bottle of wine, anchovies and calamari. I ordered the lamb but they brought me the ribs which I ate anyway and they were amazing. My date ordered pasta (boring IMO, but good). The wig had the steak (ribs are better) and fries and the toothpick had some fish plate. We all shared bites, the toothpick didn't eat much, she was saving room for dessert. But the fries were so good we ordered extra (which she inhaled, btw). When the second bottle of wine was gone, we got dessert. Panna cotta and choc. cake, wow on both. Then toothpick wanted the profiteroles, also amazing. I would go there just for dessert, which is what the guy at the table next to me said he does all the time. We all got to talking (they shared some of their food with us) and come to find out, he and I live in the same building across town! Small world, great dessert. *Hi A&W!* Review #7443

Yeah, I don't know (hence the neutral vote!). Went with out of towners who wanted authentic (i.e. North Beach style) italian and we didn't get it. Sure, the quality was amazing, everything fresh. The heirloom tomato and mozzerella salad was brilliant, but everything came at such a price, I feel like just as good yet different could be had for $50 a person. dessert was a true highlight, that's for sure, and you MUST have a reservation (preferable made prior to day of dining to ensure a pre-9:45pm time slot!)... dunno, maybe a return trip needs to happen! Fantastically wonderful italian food, and the portions are sized such that you actually can eat a 'real' italian meal - appetizer, pasta course, and second course. Don't expect just one to be enough, unless you've a very small stomach. Also, the patio out back is much better than the restaurant - often somewhat quieter and more relaxed and intimate, unless there happens to be a huge party there. Great fresh seasonal ingredients.

Cute restaurant for a date but whatever you do, DO NOT order the fish. It was sweet that our waitress offered to debone my fish for me tableside (after it had already arrived) but how do you properly remove all the bones from a fish by candlelight? My fish had so many bones left in it that it spoiled my meal. I think I prefer my fish to be deboned in the kitchen and to bypass the niceties of having it done tableside. Review #6457

One of the best in the city, certainly for the price. The food is very simple, meditarranean/italian, but the freshness of the ingredients and the expert preparation makes everything extraordinary. Try to go the full route, with salad, first course, pasta, second, and dessert. You will not be disappointed. But the great thing is, if you are on a budget, you could just go for a quick salad, pasta and dessert and get out cheap. The homemade pasta is not to be skipped! Also, among the sea of warm chocolate cakes in the world, Delfina's is the absolute tops. Worth the visit alone. Reservvations a must, although sometimes you can slip in at 9:30 without one. I liked this place, crowded (but not overly so) and cozy. I love their bar with little hooks underneath to hang your purses, why doesn't every bar have these? Service was great, with very friendly and helpful waiters. I had the best gnocchi ever at Delfina. Their were soft and pillowy with really great flavors. The wine list had a good selection. My boyfriend didn't like this place as much as me because he found the portions too small and left unsatisfied. Review #5965

This is the best italian restaurant in the Bay Area. Sample the very basic spaghetti in tomato sauce and you will pledge your allegiance to this restaurant forever. Although it's pretty tricky getting a reservation, it's well worth the effort. For a restaurant of this quality, prices are reasonable, ambience is good, and service is friendly. Review #5709

I love Delfina every time I was able to get in and get a table. Their food is one of the best and even when I'm not that hungry, I manage to put everything away. Parking in the neighbourhood can be a nightmare (although they've arranged for paid parking down the street). This is one place where you definitely need reservations if you want to sit at a table and have a meal. Their are some bar meal options as well. Their wine list is pretty good. If you have a special bottle to bring along, their corkage is $20. Review #5137

exquisite, simple Northern italian. Reservations are an absolut must, though, as they are always jam-packed and do not take walk-ins. The maitre d' is a rude bitch though, as my naive friends tried to call for a same-day reservation and she just hung up after telling them no. They've vowed never to go there again, and this after a wonderful double birthday party I arranged there for them. Great apple pie/torte dessert. Love the olives on the table. Only one pasta dish on menu. Review #2668
