“
We ate there last Sunday evening. The place was packed. A fantastic jazz guitarist played on the 2nd floor. great music, but the service was horrific--a minus 10. It took 20 minutes to get a glass of water, which should have been our first cue; I ordered a Porterhouse steak--after all, this is supposedly a steak house so I asked for it to be cooked Chicago style, medium rare. The waiter looked at me like I was asking for a Tasmanian crab dish. No clue. The steak came rare, two grill marks, not charred. I sent it back. They brought it back with a few more grill marks and I couldn't believe the ineptitude. I spoke to the manager and they took it off my bill and offered us free dessert--a very good cheesecake, but it went down poorly considering the terrible dinner. BTW, the steamed clams were also very bad--tasteless. Given the number of great places to eat in SF, avoid this place at all costs unless you want to waste your money. ”

“ Travelers beware**********
I recently returned from a trip to San Francisco (4/18/10) and several of us decided to eat at John's Grill on Ellis St. We did have a large group but they attempted to seat two of us at the corner of the table. The owner not the waiter finally brought us another table. The food was not that great either. I ordered the swordfish which easily could have been cooked in the microwave. The vegetables it came with totaled 5 green beans. Then to top off the meal, their credit card system would only allow for 4 credit card transactions, we had a party of 11 and most every everyone was from a different department. There are far better restaurants in walking distance from downtown to attempt this sorry excuse for a restaurant.
The service and the food were so horrible I swore that I was going to comment on it once I returned home. ”

“ Had the Jack LaLaine salad and it was packed with seafood! It comes with lettuce, mushrooms, tomatoes, shrimp and lots of crab! The dressing is a very light blue cheese vinaigrette so you don't feel like it's heavy and overpowering the seafood. The cost of the salad is $14.75 which is pretty good considering that you could take half home. I picked out all the seafood and left salad in the bowl but I bet two people could split this and have maybe another appetizer to split and call it a good lunch! Great place if you are in Union Square holiday shopping. But ah, stick with the salad and lobster ravioli. The seafood cannelloni is weird. It's like a mushy mess with no defined flavors and has the consistency of baby food. I had that on a separate occasion. Anyway, stick with the salad and you are good to go! ”

“ I feel like I am back in the late 40?s or early 50?s when ever I am able to drop by this old grand restaurant! The food here is nothing special, but a great menu selection with lots of seafood and great steaks! The marbled tiles floors and woodwork; with old photos show great SF history here. The service is fast, prices are reasonable and the place is always busy and fun! I?ve never had a bad meal here, even during Christmas rush! The bar serves up some great Martinis. This is a place that I could spend all afternoon here, if I didn?t have to go back to work! ”

“ My husband and I came for lunch and also for dinner. Lunch was average fare--hamburgers, etc. For dinner we had steak and fish. Both dishes were poor to fair. I would have liked for the waiter to offer me a second cocktail as we waited for our dinner, but he never came to check on us. When we paid our bill, it took *40 Minutes* for our card to be run due to problems with their credit card machine. They could have just run an imprint of it, the old fashioned way, but didn't. They also could have offered us a cup of coffee, or a free dessert as we waited. We were very disappointed and will not return. Please note: this was a $125 dinner for two people. ”

“ I actually like John's Grill. I used to belong to a barter exchange program and John's Grill was on the restaurant list. The steaks are good(not Morton's good), but the old decor(the restaurant is a landmark) is interesting and it's right downtown. I usually get the get feta cheese and olive appetizer, then dig into a steak with a couple of beers...their winelist is lacking. Alot of tourists come here because of the whole Maltese Falcon thing, but check it out next time you're shopping in Union Square. ”

“ Next to the Tadich this has to be one of my favorite places. It is one of the few honest city places around! The atmosphere is like dining rooms where 100 years ago, bustling bodies, crowded together, drinking, eating, enjoying dining and life! You don?t see this at your local Olive Garden. The menu is varied, from steak to seafood, salads and oysters. My kind of place because the waiters are pros, with a San Francisco attitude. If you?re not a native you won?t know what I?m talking about!
Sometimes hard to get into, but worth the wait! There?s a lot of history to this place so spend a little time at the bar, have a old fashioned and enjoy what THECITY is all about! Prices are moderate and the portions are good. If you go away hungry from here check on that hollow leg!
Great place to meet with friends while shopping downtown!

“ My ravioli were good, other's in my party had salad's they liked. It's practically a SF landmark with old pictures of SF politicians, etc. Waitstaff were rushed and unfriendly during lunch. ”
