Positive Cook's Seafood Restaurant Cuisine: Seafood Menlo Park
7/08 Sat. I was debating whether I should write about Cook's. We only ordered fish n chips ($10) for each of us, and shared a white clam chowder ($3 for 8 oz). The place is small, but tidy & neat. There was not really a lot of stuff to review about. How about the different choices of fish you can pick? We had the halibut, which turned out to be a 1.5” thick, credit card size chunk of meat. I didn't like the artificial shape of the fish, nor the well done meat, albeit fresh and tasty. I could have ordered the Pacific cod, salmon, or sanddab (a few $ less), since later I saw that they were fillet shape & thinner (classical!). But the giant country fries were perfectly done. The chowder was ok, but I liked it more if it was thicker (eat with a fork!). At least I did not chew on any shell particles like in other places. Well, next time when I urge for F-n-C and feel lazy to go to HMB, I will return here and order cod, along with oysters too. Review #21183

Negative Red Rose Cafe Cuisine: Barbecue Santa Rosa
If you only have 1 hour to eat a meal, forget it! Arriving at 10:30 with few other patrons, it took 10 minutes to get menus. The sole waitress was running around unfocused with multiple trips to each table while ready plates baked under hot lites. We thought we could at least get some coffees before she returned for our order 15 minutes later. Several plates kept arriving in cue at the pass while she ran around not having a clue of what efficient table waiting was. We kept looking at the plates at the pass, thinking that we would be the next, the next, the next...Well after 30 minutes we got our orders. IT was not worth the wait! Greasy tasteless matted down hash browns, dry omelettes, my friends breakfast burrito was wrapped in a dried out tortilla and the order of poached eggs where rock hard, placed in a small bowl to represent that something would actually flow out when pierced. They desperately need to look up what Multitasking is. Until then forget it! Never Again. Review #21182

Positive Mombo's Pizza Cuisine: Pizza Santa Rosa
The big downside of the internet is that someone like Samarati can so totally misrepresent himself and any unsuspecting business he chooses to dis and readers have no way of knowing whether he is legitimate or not. I own Mombo's Pizza and have since I founded it in 2001. Mombo's has never, ever used an electric oven. We have always used gas fired stone deck Montague ovens, the exact same ovens I used at Pizza My Heart in Capitola, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco from the time I founded it in 1981 until I sold it in 1990. Mombo's has only and always used the highest grade 100% whole milk mozzarella and we routinely conduct blind taste tests to insure we're using the best available. This guy is correct in stating it's not "California pizza". It is authentic New York style pizza, made from scratch daily on our premises. But the sauce is not canned. We use fresh packed tomatoes and have a recipe I've been using since first acquiring it Back East over 30 years ago. He says he's 3rd genera Review #21180

Positive Fleur De Lys Cuisine: French (New) Nob Hill
I was looking for something else online, and stumbled upon this site. The Fleur de Lys lives! I visited in 1976 for my 21st birthday, and it was magic. I had frog legs sauteed in butter, and they were delicate and delicious. They were accompanied by a lovely little mound of something with a flavor I couldn't quite place until it finally came to me - green beans and potatoes together with probably lots of cream and butter. My birthday date accompanied all of this with a $40.00 bottle of Bordeaux, and even the complimentary birthday cake of another review here sounds familiar. And yes, I remember the service - so elegant and attentive, yet friendly. How lovely to know the Fleur de Lys is still operating and delighting in San Francisco. I no longer live in SF, but look forward to visiting again. (As for my date? Ah... I married someone else!) Review #21178

Positive DiAvola Pizzeria & Salumeria Cuisine: Pizza Italian Healdsburg
Top notch gourmet pizza, using imaginative ingredients fresh from the garden and barnyard. All toppings are local farm products. The Italian chef owns the place. Uses a real wood burning oven. Recent press reviews are calling DiAvola one of the 4 best pizzerias on the west coast, alongside Delfina in SF, Serious Pie in Seattle & Pizzeria Mozza in LA. The recently re-hab'ed 100 year old brick storefront now looks urban chic cool. Service folks are sincere, cheerful, and efficient. Geyserville was an abandoned ghost town until recently. The rebirth started with Santi Restaurant a few years ago. With the new art galleries, 2 wine tasting rooms and this world class pizzeria Geyserville is becoming a fun destination. It's just 10 minutes north of Healdsburg. A worthy destination on your Sonoma wine week-end. Review #21177

Positive Santi Restaurant Cuisine: Italian Healdsburg
Yummy Alert. After buying Santi's French style white wine sausages at the Santa Rosa Farmer's market, I convinced Bambie to drive up to Geyserville for lunch. The best idea I had in 2 weeks. The food is simply fabulous. Bambie & me had roasted raddichio on toast & cheese crumbles spiked with anchovy sauce, a bowl of risotto, a bowl of simmered tripe, appetizer of marinated olives, & panna cotta. Finished with the most expensive & the richest cup of espresso I've ever had. Wine list has 150 bottles, 25 by-the-glass. Price mark-up reasonable. Tuesday night is 50% wine discount. Geyserville was a ghost town for many years. Recently several art galleries have opened. DiAvola Pizzeria (Owned & operated by Santi restaurant) opened last week to rave reviews. There's also two wine tasting shops open for your pleasure. Geyserville is now a fun tiny town destination when you visit northern Sonoma county. Eat here for fabulous Italian dishes! Review #21176

Neutral Masala Jack's Original Good Ol' Indian Curryhouse Cuisine: Indian Santa Rosa
This is Americanized versions of Indian food made for people who are afraid of spicy food. 3 of us hospital hooligans just had lunch here. We're all regular Indian food eaters, we all agreed that all the 7 different dishes that we ordered lacked aromatic spices. Food quality was a hit & miss ordeal. Tikka Masala is good, then the Nan is wet and drab. The rice was too dry. The spices on the rice were not well integrated, I actually got a raw clove in my teeth. The cauliflower/potato (aloo gobi) was mushy & had a yucky mouth feel. The spinach paneer was okay, but not very creamy. We ate a lot of food for $38. That's the deal here, it's low priced. I've had way better tasting Indian food in the SF bay area, notably Bombay Express in San Rafael and Raj Cafe in Albany (Solano Ave). Review #21175

Positive Fresca Cuisine: Peruvian Upper Fillmore
7/08 Sun. We found Fresca during the Fillmore Jazz Fest. Nouveau Peruvian cuisine? Curiosity turned into a taste expedition. The small interior is decorated with Peruvian arts and blasted with hip music. For the ceviche trio ($15), we picked hamachi sashimi, lobster & crab, and mix of halibut, squid, clam & shrimp. Amazingly the sauce was different for each group, from pleasing soy/wasabi to sharp lime juice. Very titillating! The conchitas ($12) was very refined - pesto & quinoa crusted giant scallops, on a bed of mashed white bean & truffle lobster sauce. Nouveau indeed! The paella ($23) was outstanding - moist & full of spices with sausage, chicken, squid, scallop, mussel & clam. Half pitcher of sangria ($15) was enough for 4 - refreshing and well balanced in wine, juice & soda. For finale ($8 each), the tres leches chocolate cake was tender & subtly sweet, and the purple corn creme brulee was uniquely smooth & flavorful. The busy staff kept their sanity and efficiency. Bravo! 4* Review #21174

Positive Borobudur Cuisine: Indonesian Tenderloin
The fried tofu was good. The tofu with eggplant was outstanding. The chicken satay was excellent. The lamb curry was delicious. The Indonesian iced coffee was tasty as well. The service was family shop fare - a fine pace if you're in no hurry. Recommended. Review #21173

Positive Chow's Kitchen Cuisine: Chinese Potrero Hill
Pot stickers are house made and delicious. The green onion pancake was tasty. The hot & sour soup was good. The general's chicken was also tasty. The show stopper was the beef with fresh basil. Excellent service - recommended. Review #21172
